I
have some WarMECH's Domain exclusive news. Square-Enix contacted me a few
weeks ago, they gave me and some other gaming sites a trial version of an
upcoming game for the V Cast cellphones on Verizon Wireless. I had to sign
a contract to not show any screenshots of the game, which includes the title
screen, until April 28. However, the contract does not state that I am not
allowed to show a picture of my cellphone's log. Check
out the log here, it clearly shows that
Final Fantasy V is on the cellphone. According to my lawyer, the only
things I cannot mention are the estimated release date and the percentage that
the game is complete. The game has many scenes cut out of it. For
example, the entire Torna Canal and Ship Graveyard has been reduced to just
Hydra hitting a whirlpool. The dungeons have less floors than the regular
Final Fantasy V game. Enemies and characters have less colors, from what I
can tell the colors per sprite have been reduced from 16 to 8. The
backgrounds are less detailed and generic, every overworld battle has the same
background, regardless of where the battle takes place. Enemies seem to
have less HP in this version and loading a battle takes about 7 seconds.
The save option is not in the menu, but there is a MEMO option, which is a
quicksave. One strange thing is that the quicksave does not erase until
you
make another quicksave. I'm not sure if they plan on having multiple save
slots. The game is in full English. According to Square-Enix, this
port is USA only, probably due to the game being on V Cast. Also, the
meteor effect in the intro was AWFUL, it was like 5 frames of a meteor coming
towards the screen and 5 more frames of it going away. The mode 7 scene of
it hitting the ground was replaced by a normal view of the overworld
shaking. One last thing, the trial of this game ends on April 28 and the
game says "Connecting" when you load it, so I'm assuming I won't have
access to it after April 28. I'll try to see how far I can get and I'll
keep you guys updated. -Marcelo
